What’s on your iPhone? — Winter ’10 edition

While I should probably be writing part 3 of my epic series on the App Phone Wars, it doesn’t seem wise to spend much time on that in advance of Apple’s big announce today.  And I also need to think about the impact of the new news that the Palm Pre and Pixie will now be available on Verizon.   So I have a few topics in the bag, which is a good thing.

But today I’m going to start a new (maybe quarterly?) series of postings about iPhone apps.  As mobile and social media become the hub of human activity in the US and other developed countries, the progression of the apps is going to fascinating to watch.  I’d love to hear from you on your favorite apps, so send them in.  I’m not going to add any links here.  If you want to see the apps, download it from the app store!

These are the handful of apps I find the most useful on a daily basis:

1)      MSNBC. And NY Times – these two news sources are excellent.  MSNBC’s app sends push alerts on important news which is also useful.

2)      IMDB – I’m a movie addict.  IMDB is the for when you have to know who “that guy” is.

3)      Lose It – in the never ending struggle to stay fit, Lose it calculates how many calories you can eat, based on the number of calories you burned.  It tracks both in a very easy to manage fashion.

4)      Google Voice Search – best way I know to find something fast.  The voice recognition is the best I’ve ever witnessed.

5)      CardStar – great for capturing loyalty card info and publishing that data in barcard format.  The scanner at CVS can read it off the iPhone – but Stop and Shop can’t.  Dang.  This is the beginning of something big.
